FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need money to get a SBOING(ΤΜ) navigator and SBOING(ΤΜ) maps?

No, you get a SBOING(ΤΜ) navigator with basic functionality and a full set of OSM-based world maps for FREE. For more advanced navigators and more updated (SBOING(ΤΜ)) maps, you may upgrade to higher editions (silver, gold, platinum).

Are the free SBOING(ΤΜ) maps good enough?

The basic SBOING(ΤΜ) maps are based on OSM maps. They are good enough for most world areas and keep getting better as OSM maps are getting better.

Can I keep getting SBOING(ΤΜ) maps, for free, for ever?

Yes! Just keep driving around with your trace recorder on and upload your traces!

What do I need to record and upload my traces?

You need a "SBOING(ΤΜ) trace logger" for the platform you are using. This is included in sbNavi(tm), the SBOING(TM) navigator, which is available from SBOING(ΤΜ) (check out the "PRODUCTS" page).

I am driving and recording traces on the same route several times.. Does this count?

Yes it does and you get credit (SCU) for this, too. However, we appreciate more a variety of routes, especially "uncharted" ones, at various times or with various conditions.. :-)

I don't want to upload traces. Can I still get updated SBOING(ΤΜ) maps?

Yes! You can purchase SCU via PayPal or credit card.

I don't want to upload traces and I don't want to pay anything! Can I still get a SBOING(ΤΜ) navigator and SBOING(ΤΜ) maps for free?

Yes! Just maintain a SBOING(ΤΜ) account and check it out frequently. Quite often, special offers for free amounts of SCU are send by SBOING-administrator messages to selected users (lots of them!). If you receive such a message and reply within 5 days you get the free SCU! If you reply within 2 days, you get them double!

Do you sell navigator hardware for SBOING(ΤΜ), too?

No, (at least not yet). But we are open for collaboration with navigator hardware vendors, for revenue sharing based collaborations.

How is SBOING(ΤΜ)'s navigator better than others?

Today's maps and navigators associate staic information about the time it takes to travel through a road segment, (usually ~80% of the speed limit). SBOING(ΤΜ) routing is based on multi-parametric (time-dependent, vehicle-dependent, weather-dependent, etc.) information for each road segment. Therefore, its routing function is more accurate as it can capture rush-hour congestion delays, different traffic conditions during a rainy day, a holiday, or after midnight! Our advanced versions contain more intelligent optimizations, too!

How is SBOING(ΤΜ)'s navigator worse than others?

SBOING(ΤΜ) navigators are tied with SBOING(ΤΜ) maps. SBOING(ΤΜ) maps are not yet as complete as other vendors' maps, but they are getting better and better, with more up-to-date data, as users upload their traces as well as map corrections and other map data (street names, PoI, etc.). Soon, SBOING(ΤΜ) is expected to catch up and be "the best kid in town"! ;-)

SBOING(ΤΜ) maps must be huge! Will they fit in my navigator?

Indeed, SBOING(ΤΜ) maps can be big. Download only what you want, only what you need, in terms of map area and parameter set. For example, you don't need "truck data", if you are driving a Porche!.. With memory capacities of navigators becoming larger and larger, this is fast becoming less of any issue.

How do you make sure that SBOING(ΤΜ) maps are accurate?

SBOING(ΤΜ) maps are "drawn" after statistical processing of a number of user traces. One user's traces are not enough to draw the map with certainty. E.g., if 8 out of 10 user traces indicate that one road in driven in one direction, this most likely implies that this road is driven in this direction. Of course, forced map corrections and map additions from SBOING(ΤΜ) users and SBOING(ΤΜ) personnel are enabled to correct any map flaws or inaccuracies. In any case, we resend any liability for map inaccuracies, (see our related Disclaimer).

What if some user maliciously uploads erroneous or deliberately false data?

All user traces are verified for validity (with trace digests, digital signatures, etc.). Moreover, our statistical processing of the user traces ensures that isolated user attempts to provide false information will be identified and filtered out and the malicious user will be warned and subsequently suspended.

Is my privacy violated with the traces I upload?

Definitely not! Your traces are not associated with your actual ID and we guarantee that we will not use the uploaded information for any other purposes but forming SBOING(ΤΜ) maps (see our "Privacy Policy"). If you still don't trust us, you may always choose to create an account with any private information you wish (pseudonym or alias), although we don't encourage this type of SBOING(ΤΜ) membership.

Do other vendors' navigators read SBOING(ΤΜ) maps?

Currently not, but we soon hope to make it happen! :-)

Do SBOING(ΤΜ) navigators read other vendors' maps?

Nope! SBOING(ΤΜ) navigators only read SBOING(ΤΜ) maps (and any other open and free map format). However, SBOING(ΤΜ)'s advanced routing depends on and requires only SBOING(ΤΜ) maps.

I have another vendor's navigator and maps. Can I still take advantage of SBOING(ΤΜ)'s better routing?

Maybe. If you can download and run an appropriate SBOING(ΤΜ) navigator executable on your device, bypassing your existing navigator, then you can enjoy the advanced routing features (and not only!) of SBOING(ΤΜ) navigation! (For more, see our compatibility list, which btw grows fast!..)

Why should any navigator vendor support SBOING(ΤΜ) maps?

Because SBOING(ΤΜ) maps are soon going to be more up-to-date and universal than any other vendor's maps, since they are going to be updated by users continuously, not every 3 months or so. Moreover, SBOING(ΤΜ) maps do not cost them anything and they are pretty good, even today, already!

Are SBOING(ΤΜ) navigators tied with any vendor, development platform, operating system, or specific hardware?

Nope! We keep on producing SBOING(ΤΜ) executables compatible with various hardware and operating systems, (pls. check out our current compatibility list to see if your needs are supported).

Can I use SBOING(ΤΜ) with my smart-phone?

Of course, as long it is supported, (check out our compatibility list). Currently only iOS is supported (iPhone and iPad).

Is SBOING(ΤΜ) open-source?

Some of it is. We keep only some parts proprietary which are offered as libraries, APIs or upon request. We would very much appreciate any volunteering member contributions of open-source development efforts that would improve our navigator.

Are SBOING(ΤΜ) maps open-format?

Nope, not yet! (But we're sure several good people will reverse engineer them, before we disclose them!.. ;-) )

Can you really support a world map defined by millions or billions of user traces?

It takes a lot of processing power, network bandwidth and database capacity in the order of 100 TBytes, but we are committed to handle it, we can and we will! Our backend processing system consists of highly reliable data servers and fully scalable, in terms of processing power, network bandwidth and data capacity.

What is the relationship between SBOING(ΤΜ) and OpenStreetMap (OSM)?

The OpenStreetMap (OSM) organization (www.openstreetmap.org) has created a map of the world, based on user traces, much like SBOING(ΤΜ) will. However, OSM maps do not contain dynamic information for travel delays for each road segment; SBOING(ΤΜ) maps do. The parts of SBOING(ΤΜ) maps that are based on OSM map data are offered for free, with the same licence type as OSM data (i.e., "Creative Commons Attribution - Share alike 2.0", CC-BY-SA, generic license). We benefit from OSM data and we are committed to contribute our own data traces (stripped from SBOING(ΤΜ)-specific information) to OSM as well.

How can I profit from SBOING(ΤΜ)?

Definitely! For example, you may become a navigator hardware distributor (see ads in this site) supporting SBOING(ΤΜ) navigation and maps with minimum extra cost (a revenue sharing model). Other ideas and suggestions are also welcome!

Is SBOING(ΤΜ) patented?

We have applied for a patent for the SBOING(ΤΜ) methodology and systems, since 2008. As of today, the patent is granted in Greece, USA, E.U., Australia and pending in China, India and Israel.

Why are you doing this? Do you make money out of it?

We have put a lot of effort in SBOING(ΤΜ) (and keep doing it!) because we believe in the collaboration of people as a means to offer more and better to the society! We think wikipedia is a bright and very encouraging example in this direction! However, we also believe in professionalism and SBOING(ΤΜ) requires professional efforts as well, in order to keep offering its support services. That's why we need to be making some money too, to support our people behind SBOING(ΤΜ). Advertising and revenue sharing with hardware vendors are our main sources of financial support, so far. (Other creative business ideas and investment opportunities are highly encouraged! :-) )

Why do you think SBOING(ΤΜ) will be successful?

Because wikipedia has been suucessful and SBOING aspires to become the new World "Navipedia". Because we are universal and vendor independent. Because we are free and open. Because we believe in people's volunteering collaboration for producing "creative commons".

What does SBOING(ΤΜ) mean anyway?!

It's a name, global and easy to remember as YAHOO!, GOOGLE, BING, etc. ;-) It may mean "Simply Better, Open and Intelligent Navigation Gadgets" :-) or anything else you wish!..
